STUDY: Plant-Centered Diets Associated with Reduced Biological Aging at the DNA Level

Researchers at the University of Washington analyzed data from nearly 5,000 American adults and discovered that individuals consuming a higher quantity of plant-based foods exhibited significantly slower biological aging as measured in their DNA.

The investigation utilized two prominent health datasets and applied epigenetic clocks to assess cellular aging beyond just chronological years.

Subjects with elevated plant-based diet scores demonstrated a reduction in DNA aging markers ranging from 0.16 to 0.34 years.

Among the plant foods studied, whole grains showed the most consistent and strongest association with decelerated aging across both datasets.

Crucially, the measure of DNA aging accounted for 33 to 42% of the observed link between plant-based dietary patterns and increased lifespan.

Lead investigator Hyunju Kim emphasized that participants did not have to adhere to strict vegetarianism; even moderate increases in plant food intake coupled with reductions in animal product consumption were linked to beneficial effects.

Conversely, consumption of less healthy plant-derived items such as refined grains and sugary beverages did not exhibit any protective influence on biological aging.
