5 Subtle Indicators You Might Be Excessively Fixated on Your Child

Published April 17, 2026

Everyone cherishes their children. This intense, heart-stirring affection is an intrinsic part of parenting. We all view our offspring as intelligent, amusing, and endearing. Parenting often comes with a rosy perspective. Some argue this is fortunate because without such adoration, parents might harm their children. That viewpoint may offend some, especially those who don’t share the same level of affection. These individuals are not just loving—they are obsessed.

Below are 5 awkward signs that suggest you might be overly obsessed with your child:

1. Nearly every Facebook post, photo, status update, or video features your child

Not just a few, but almost every single one. These images tend to look alike, capturing similar awkward expressions. The only differences are the captions: “Kaytlyn sat up!” “Addyson rolled over!” Nothing is off-limits — “Jayden took his first steps!” Parents describe Kyndly’s diaper mishaps as if narrating a David Attenborough documentary about a newly discovered species. Eventually, others tune out and move on, leaving Mommy happily posting to an audience of one: Grandma.

2. You equate your child’s experiences with your own

For example, the baby didn’t get his six-month vaccinations; instead, we got our six-month shots. This indicates an unhealthy merging of your identity with your child’s if it happens more than occasionally.

3. You disregard public etiquette in favor of your child’s needs

It’s normal for babies to cry on airplanes and for children to get restless indoors. However, a friend once witnessed a woman loudly declare she wouldn’t bother with the car or bathroom, then proceeded to change her child’s foul diaper on a restaurant table in full view of everyone. If your devotion to your child comes at the expense of others’ comfort or social norms, it’s time for a reality check.

4. You connect every topic back to your child

No matter what is mentioned, your response circles back to your kid. Talk about your dog, and you hear, “Oh, Jaylinn loves dogs!” Bring up world peace, and the reply is, “I hope we solve our problems so we can leave a better world for kids like Jaylinn.” This all-encompassing tendency can be perplexing.

5. You refuse to discuss anything unrelated to your child

You know excessive details about your child’s bowel habits, bedtime rituals, sports achievements, and academic performance. While all parents occasionally share such stories, when it becomes constant or overlaps with other signs, it may indicate an obsession with your child.

Every parent exhibits some of these behaviors at times; this is normal. However, persistent or multiple signs suggest the risk of being overly fixated on your child.
