Maine Chicken Recognized as World's Oldest at 15 Years and 100 Days

Published April 17, 2026

Gertie, a Golden Sebright hen residing in Portland, Maine, has officially been declared the world's oldest living chicken at the age of 15 years and 100 days.

Her owner, Frank Turek, first brought Gertie home as a newly hatched chick in 2010, captivated by her striking feathers and photogenic appearance. Although she belongs to a smaller breed, Gertie maintained dominance over the flock across four successive generations of chicks throughout the years.

"Many of the earlier chickens have passed away, and those that were too aggressive to coexist were rehomed — yet despite all these changes, Gertie remained the undisputed leader," Turek shared with Guinness World Records.

Several years ago, after losing her sight, Gertie was relocated in 2024 to a secure indoor coop to shield her from the younger hens. She still recognizes her name, responding with "pup, pup, pup" sounds, and delights in engaging with people through conversation.

Gertie has exceeded the former record-holder, Pearl from Texas, by over six months and is expected to celebrate her 16th birthday in July.
