Scientists Confirm Lobsters Feel Pain, Label Boiling Alive as Cruel Practice

Published April 17, 2026

Recent research provides clear evidence that lobsters endure real pain when subjected to boiling while still alive, putting traditional cooking practices into question.

Researchers investigating Norway lobsters found that administering human pain relievers such as aspirin and lidocaine notably diminished the animals' intense tail-flip reactions to electrical shocks. This indicates that crustaceans experience genuine pain sensations rather than merely reflexive muscle responses.

Lynne Sneddon, a co-author of the study from the University of Gothenburg, emphasized, "Scientific findings show that boiling crustaceans alive is inhumane," adding, "We would never tolerate boiling a cow or chicken alive."

Several countries, including Norway, New Zealand, and Austria, have already prohibited the practice of boiling crustaceans alive. Scientists are currently investigating electrical stunning as a more humane method of handling these animals.
