September 11, 2026

Shelby High School Sophomore Recognized for Athletic and Academic Achievements

Oliver Gorton, a sophomore at Shelby High School, has been named the school’s Athlete of the Week for his performance as the Tigers’ soccer goalkeeper. Gorton, who has played soccer for most of his life, is credited with uplifting his teammates and demonstrating strong leadership on and off the field.

Soccer Journey and Role in the Team

Gorton began his soccer journey at a young age, encouraged by his family and coaches. While he started out playing a variety of positions, he eventually found his passion as a goalkeeper, citing the excitement and responsibility that comes with protecting the net. His favorite aspects of goalkeeping are the pressure-filled moments and the opportunity to energize his team with key saves. Gorton also acknowledged the mental challenges of the position, particularly when conceding goals, but focuses on quickly resetting and moving forward.

Season Progress and Team Environment

This season, Gorton describes the Tigers as a young and developing team. Despite facing tough competition, Shelby currently holds a record of three wins and three losses. Gorton highlights the electrifying atmosphere following team victories, as well as the emphasis on supporting each other and maintaining a positive mindset after defeats.

Goals and Aspirations

Looking ahead, Gorton is focused on self-improvement and has set personal aims such as enhancing his kicking abilities. His primary athletic goals for the remainder of his high school career include achieving success against the team’s local rival and making a deeper run in district competition. Gorton is also open to the possibility of continuing with soccer beyond high school, depending on how the next two years progress.

Leadership and Mentorship

Although only a sophomore, Gorton takes on a leadership role from the back of the field, communicating with and motivating his teammates during games and practices. He credits former coaches and his father—also a teacher at Shelby—for providing guidance and developing his positive, team-oriented mentality.

Academic and Personal Interests

In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Gorton maintains a 4.0 GPA and has a strong interest in math and science, inspired by some of his teachers at Shelby. He describes his academic focus as an important part of his high school experience and something he may pursue in college.

Outstanding Moments and Team Spirit

Gorton recalls a standout achievement during a recent match against a rival, making a crucial save in the final seconds to secure a victory for the Tigers. He expresses gratitude for his coaches and teammates, especially noting the excitement of playing with a talented group of fellow sophomores.

Gorton’s commitment to both self-improvement and supporting those around him exemplifies the values recognized by Shelby High School’s Athlete of the Week honor.

Noel Parker Named Athlete of the Week

Shelby High School senior Noel Parker has been recognized as the school’s Athlete of the Week, highlighting her dedication and achievements in cross country and track. As a member of the cross country team in the fall and the track team in the spring, Parker has become a key competitor for the Tigers.

Dedication to Running

Parker has participated in cross country since seventh grade and joined after encouragement from a friend. Originally starting out with volleyball, she discovered a passion for running and has continued with the sport throughout middle and high school. She maintains a strong routine, often running after work and varying her training between long-distance runs, hill workouts, and different terrains, including dirt and paved roads near her home.

Recent Season and Achievements

This year’s cross country season began for Parker with a meet on August 22. She trains independently outside team practices, sometimes running at her grandfather’s airstrip for safety and convenience. Her consistent efforts have been noticed by her coaches and teammates, particularly her improvements tackling hills, which are a challenge in cross country courses.

Parker has received all-conference honors twice for cross country and recently earned the title in track as well, marking consecutive recognition for her athletic performance.

Academic Balance and Future Plans

Balancing athletics with academics is important to Parker, who emphasizes the value of education alongside her commitment to sports. She enjoys art classes and plans to attend community college after graduation to explore interests in the design field and complete general studies while considering future athletic participation at the collegiate level.

Impact and Leadership

Parker credits her teammates and family, particularly her father, for motivating her to train and compete. She named several teammates as especially supportive and describes the team environment as one that encourages personal bests and positivity. Parker hopes her dedication can inspire others at school to pursue athletics and find enjoyment in the process.

As Shelby High School’s first Athlete of the Week under a new recognition program, Parker sets a high standard for future honorees. The school community celebrates her commitment, achievements, and positive influence on and off the course.
