Nicole Kidman Intends to Train as a Death Doula After Her Mother's Passing

Published April 15, 2026

Nicole Kidman revealed her intention to become a death doula following the deep sorrow she experienced after her mother passed away in May 2024. During an event at the University of San Francisco, the acclaimed actress shared that her motivation arose from witnessing her 84-year-old mother’s isolation in her final moments.

"As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide," Kidman reflected. She highlighted the challenge of balancing responsibilities, mentioning that while managing children, careers, and caring for her mother after her father’s absence, she longed for "people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care."

Although she acknowledged that the concept might seem "a little weird," Kidman expressed that this experience ignited a genuine interest in helping others navigate grief and loss.

Death doulas are non-medical caregivers who offer psychosocial, emotional, spiritual, and practical support during the transition at the end of life.
