SURVEY: Americans Exhibit Distinctive Pessimism Toward Their Political System

Published April 16, 2026

A survey conducted by Pew Research Center across 25 countries highlights a striking level of dissatisfaction among Americans regarding their political system, despite the nation's strong economic standing. While 77% of U.S. respondents feel that the political system requires significant overhaul or complete reform, the United States simultaneously boasts the highest GDP per capita among all countries included in the survey. This sentiment stands in stark contrast to other affluent nations where the majority of citizens tend to favor preserving the current political framework.

Almost half of Americans fall into the category of "pessimistic reformers," individuals who desire substantial changes but remain skeptical about the likelihood of those changes occurring. In comparison, only 23% of Americans advocate for keeping the existing system with only minor modifications.

The United States is among nine countries, including Greece, France, Spain, and Italy, where pessimistic reformers constitute the largest group.

In addition to political dissatisfaction, Americans demonstrate comparatively lower levels of social trust. Just 55% of Americans believe that most people can be trusted, which is significantly lower than the 80% trust level reported in Sweden and the Netherlands.
