Young Adults Embrace Vintage Gadgets Amid Rising Digital Detox Trend

Published April 17, 2026

A significant number of young individuals are turning away from contemporary technology in favor of classic devices such as flip phones, iPods, and typewriters, as part of an expanding movement to combat digital overwhelm.

Sonya Saydakova, a 23-year-old student at New York University, transitioned from using an iPhone to a Nokia flip phone, expressing, "It’s an indescribable sensation to feel so disconnected and not perpetually reachable."

Parents are also adopting this approach; Alex Becker, a mother from Philadelphia, chooses to keep smartphones away from her young children to maintain "the joy of childhood."

Dean Jamieson, a writer based in Brooklyn, composes his novels on a 1964 Olivetti typewriter, citing the distractions caused by the internet.

eBay data reveals that iPods were searched more than 1,300 times per hour in 2025, with their prices increasing between 40% and 60%.

This transition highlights a cultural fatigue with nonstop connectivity and worries about digital addiction among young people, with those involved reporting feelings of greater freedom and improved concentration.
