Michael Jackson Biopic Underwent $15M Reshoots to Remove Child Abuse References

The Michael Jackson biographical film, Michael, experienced extensive reshoots costing between $10 million and $15 million after the filmmakers uncovered a legal agreement that prohibited portraying abuse allegations. The Jackson estate financed the reshoot expenses and acquired an equity stake in the project.

Initially, the screenplay contained scenes related to Jackson's 1993 child molestation allegations, with the third act centered on how the scandal affected his life. However, lawyers representing the Jackson estate identified a settlement clause with accuser Jordan Chandler that barred any mention of him in cinematic works.

The cast reunited for 22 days of additional filming to develop a new conclusion set during Jackson's Bad tour.

Featuring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead role and Colman Domingo portraying Joe Jackson, the movie now emphasizes family relationships and Jackson’s recovery following his 1984 Pepsi commercial accident.

Pre-release tracking indicates the film could open domestically with approximately $55 million when it premieres on April 24th.
