STUDY: Nicotine E-Cigarettes Consistently Outperform Other Methods in Helping Smokers Quit

Researchers from Oxford University conducted an analysis of 14 systematic reviews and discovered that every statistical comparison favored nicotine-containing e-cigarettes over other cessation aids such as patches, gums, or counseling for quitting smoking.

The investigation included 21 different comparisons involving thousands of participants. Those using e-cigarettes with nicotine were found to be between 1.5 and 2.4 times more likely to successfully quit smoking after six months compared to users of traditional cessation methods.

When compared to placebo vaping devices, nicotine e-cigarettes demonstrated a 2.37-fold increase in quit rates. Furthermore, when nicotine e-cigarettes were used alongside nicotine replacement therapy, the likelihood of quitting rose by 3.53 times compared to using nicotine replacement therapy alone.

Regarding safety, the data on serious adverse events remains inconclusive because most studies lacked sufficient sample sizes to reliably detect rare harmful effects.

The study also identified notable research gaps: no investigations were found that directly compared e-cigarettes to commonly prescribed medications such as bupropion or cytisine. Additionally, nearly all the evidence originated from high-income countries, highlighting a lack of data from lower-income regions.
