SURVEY: Americans Prioritize Giving and Volunteering Despite Drop in Charity Contributions

Recent research indicates that 91% of Americans view giving and volunteering as important personal values, although traditional charity metrics fail to capture the majority of generous behaviors.

According to a study conducted by the Generosity Commission involving 2,569 adults, 75% of respondents aim to express generosity through everyday activities such as rounding up purchases at checkout, assisting neighbors, or sending financial support to family members overseas.

Financial limitations remain the primary obstacle, with 57% of participants reporting money as a barrier and 69% unable to donate as much as they wish after meeting essential living expenses.

Americans show a preference for contributing to local causes where the impact is tangible, with 67% desiring clear information on how their donations are utilized.

Although media coverage often highlights celebrity acts of generosity, only 9% of those surveyed trust celebrities as credible advocates for charitable giving.

Family plays a pivotal role in fostering generosity, with 56% attributing their current giving habits to lessons learned during childhood.
