SURVEY: Majority of College Students Engage with AI Weekly for Academic Work

A recent survey indicates that 57% of college students in the United States utilize artificial intelligence tools for their coursework at least once a week, with 20% engaging with AI on a daily basis.

The research, which included responses from more than 3,800 students, highlighted numerous advantages: 86% reported that AI aids in comprehending difficult subjects, 76% noted it saves them time, and 70% experienced improved academic performance. Despite this widespread use, institutional policies have not kept pace with student adoption.

Currently, 42% of educational institutions discourage the use of AI, and 11% have outright bans, whereas only 40% actively promote the use of such technology.

Male students, along with those studying business, technology, and engineering, are the most frequent users of AI tools.

Students who refrain from using AI often do so due to ethical concerns or because they consider it a form of cheating.

The researchers stress the importance of colleges establishing clear guidelines on AI use, emphasizing that proficiency with this technology will be critical for students’ future professional success.
