Ava Mauntler Receives Inaugural Athlete of the Week Honor

Onekama High School senior Ava Mauntler has been named the school’s first Athlete of the Week in a new recognition program for outstanding student-athletes. The award, covering the week of August 31, marks Mauntler’s achievements and leadership as she returns for her senior year.

Three-Sport Athlete and Volleyball Standout

Mauntler competes in volleyball, basketball, and softball for Onekama High School. She is currently focused on volleyball, a sport she began in sixth grade. Since joining the varsity volleyball team as an eighth-grader, Mauntler has taken on key roles, especially as a libero, which she cites as her favorite position.

This volleyball season began positively for Mauntler and the team, with a notable opening win in five sets against the defending state champions. As the team adjusts to new members, Mauntler highlights the importance of energy, leadership, and team bonding to overcome challenges.

Leadership On and Off the Court

Mauntler has participated in leadership classes at her school and sees leadership as essential to her role, both on the court and in supporting her teammates. She works alongside fellow seniors to create a positive atmosphere, often helping underclassmen adjust to the team.

Academic Focus and Future Plans

In the classroom, Mauntler is described as energetic and strives to be a positive role model for younger students. Math is her favorite subject, and she values teachers who make learning engaging. Looking ahead, Mauntler plans to continue her volleyball career in college and has an offer from Calvin, which she currently considers her top choice.
